Bradley James, Arthur in Merlin, will be playing Damien, the Antichrist, in Lifetime's 6 part TV series Damien!

Damien follows the adult life of Damien Thorn (James), the mysterious child from the 1976 film [The Omen] who has grown up, seemingly unaware of the satanic forces around him. Haunted by his past, Damien must now come to terms with his true destiny — that he is the Antichrist, the most feared man throughout the ages.

Damien, slated to premiere in 2015.

Fantastic! I cannot wait to see this.

From the execs of Merlin - Merlin 2.0... err, Atlantis! Seriously, this looks so much like Merlin, it's ridiculous. The athletic guy, the bumbling idiot genius, the angry king, mysterious messages about destiny... And you can already see that the slash fandom will eat it with a spoon.

But I don't feel like watching it, I don't feel like watching the writers make the same mistakes all over again, to watch them totally misunderstand what their viewers want - remember the whole "we didn't find the reveal of Merlin's powers all that important" crap? But I might end up watching it anyway, especially if the fics/tumblr explode with the show. I'm easy like that. But right now? Right now I'm rolling my eyes.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Just... EEEEEEEEEEEEE! I want to watch so many of them! Sherlock, Quirke, The Three Musketeers, The Great Train Robbery...!

OMG! The Sherlock bit! And... The Three Musketeers look so, soooooo much better than I expected it to! Forget about Atlantis, the wannabe Merlin that - at least so far - looks utterly ridiculous! The Three Musketeers will be IT this season, the replacement for Merlin and with Santiago Cabrera as Aramis, too!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I can't wait for this TV season to start \o/

So, Colin Morgan returned to his theater roots in the Shakespeare Globe Theater in London, where he stars as Ariel in Shakespeare's The Tempest. What is it about?

Prospero, Duke of Milan, usurped and exiled by his own brother, holds sway over an enchanted island. He is comforted by his daughter Miranda and served by his spirit Ariel and his deformed slave Caliban. When Prospero raises a storm to wreck this perfidious brother and his confederates on the island, his long contemplated revenge at last seems within reach.

Morgan will be playing the role of Ariel, the spirit who rescues Prospero after he shipwrecks on the island. Ariel is enslaved to the witch Sycorax, and by helping Prospero he hopes to be granted his freedom.

Also, Prospero is played by Roger Allam, Douglas in BBC Radio 4's Cabin Pressure!

Sweet! Katie McGrath in Dracula, Eoin Macken in After Hours (if it's picked up for a series, that is), Tom Hopper in Black Sails...

Colin Morgan won the "Drama Performance: Male" category at the NTA's last night. Loved what Bradley James said about it: "Don't know if it was obvious by the way I kept hitting him, but was and still am, beaming with pride for NTA 'Best Actor' Colin Morgan." Source.

Colin also confirmed that he didn't think a Merlin movie would ever happen: link.
katikat: (Merlin_Gwaine)

You know, till the series finale, I have never thought of Gwaine and Percival as a possible Merlin pairing but now? Wow. I mean seriously! Spoilers! ) And then I saw this tumblr gif set: link. All I could think was: Was I actually blind?!

So now, I have three pairings in this fandom.
-- My main one is Arthur/Merlin, of course - the finale made them as close to canon as possible. No matter the heartbreak, there was no doubt that these two were meant to be together and that they would be together again, one day. This is more than fans of any other slash pairing out there ever got, right?
-- My second favorite is Gwaine/Merlin - I mean, have you seen their last scene? Sheesh!
-- And my third is Gwaine/Percival. Their last scene... wow, just wow. That was definitely NOT pure friendship.

So many options! I have never had so many pairings in one fandom before, not ones that I loved almost equally. Fantastic!

Also, Eoin Macken (Gwaine) and Tom Hopper (Percival) filmed a movie togethere called Cold: link. It was written and directed by Eoin and Tom Hopper plays the main part in it. Very little is known about who plays whom, but the synopsis says:

This is a dramatic feature film called 'Cold', written and directed by myself, Eoin C. Macken. The story is inspired by a piece in John Steinbecks East of Eden, and the plot centres around two disconnected English brothers who are ostracized in a small village in the west of Ireland. Drawn back together by the unexpected and mysterious death of their father, they are immediately at odds until they find a girl dumped still alive in the moors. What follows is a bizarre turn of events, both beautiful and surreal as the two brothers search for their own resolution. At turns both a love story and the resolution of cracked relationships, the film has a incredible and unexpected twist.

Source

I had honestly no idea that Eoin has directed so many movies already. Good for him. I hope this movie is a success. Sometimes, indie movies made with love are so much better than soulless blockbusters. Also, I think I will follow Eoin's career more closely. Of all the knights, I liked him best.

This morning, I woke up dry-eyed and headachy from all the crying I did last night. Like, seriously, I know that it's just a TV show but for 5 years, I have lived with these characters, I have laughed and cried with them, cheered and rooted for them. An ending is always sad, saying good-bye to characters you got to love and hold dear, but this one was exceptionally sad and full of desperate inevitability. I wish they had ended it on a hopeful note at least...

Mostly me blubbering about the series finale... )

Now that Merlin's over, I hope Colin Morgan and Bradley James get to work on stuff with more variety. They both have such a perfect comedic timing... yet they get cast in the same parts again and again: Colin as a junkie or whatever in really depressing movies and Bradley as a dumb jock. I think it's really too bad and I hope it'll change now that they will have the time to choose their parts wisely.
katikat: (S_Merlin)
That there has never been a greater love than Merlin's for Arthur. Spoilers! ) Nobody will ever convince me that these two were just friends, not after this.

I need to watch it again but I'm crying so hard I have actually trouble breathing. I can't remember the last time something affected me that much.

Merlin 509 )

Merlin 510 )

You know what's awesome? That Arthur and Merlin are real men now. And by that I mean the actors are finally playing characters of their own age, what with all the time jumps. I love how strong Arthur looks, not just muscled but solid. And that Merlin doesn't look as gaunt anymore, the added weight helps a lot. So, so lovely...

Merlin 505 )

Merlin 506 )

Merlin 507 )

I don't think there's a more loyal character on TV than Merlin. I mean, sure, there are shows where characters are loyal to each other - but their loyalty is always divided: they have a girlfriend/boyfriend, a wife/husband, children... someone to whom they are loyal TOO. But for Merlin, it's just Arthur. Arthur is the centerpiece of his universe, he lives and breathes for Arthur. If Arthur died, Merlin's life would be over. I really, truly believe that Merlin loves Arthur with a depth that surpasses everything. Arthur's the sun and the moon and the stars for Merlin... I've never seen such a loyalty before, anywhere. It's beautiful and humbling and I'm actually surprised the writers weren't tempted to give Merlin a love interest to "dilute the slash" as American writers would've done (see Callen and Sam, for example). I love it.
katikat: (S_Merlin)
So, dialog teasers for Merlin's finale were posted - and they made me very, VERY happy. No spoilers for the ending, just what they imply...

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

USA Network just renewed Psych for season 8. The number of episodes and whether the early renewal means that S8 will be its last is unknown. S7 premieres Feb. 27: source. Interesting. I still like the show but I wouldn't mind if S8 were its last.

Last week, SyFy pulled Haven's episode because it featured violence in a high school setting. Thus they had to postpone the season finale too because the show is heavily serialized and eps 12 and 13 are connected. Now, they will air both episodes back to back on Thurs. Jan. 17 8-10pm: source.

I still haven't caught up on Merlin - I plan to marathon the show once it's done next week - but my opinion on what will happen in the series finale, based on the promos! ) What do you think?
katikat: (Actors_ColinMorgan)
There's unlikely to be a Merlin movie because any additional stories beyond the television finale could leave fans "unsatisfied", according to the show's star Colin Morgan.

The 26-year-old actor, who has played the young wizard since the BBC fantasy drama began in 2008, says he's "very pleased" with the way series five concludes and believes that fans will be similarly satisfied that the show ends "on a high".

"I think now that it's out in the open that this is the final series, I think fans will be satisfied with how it's ended" Morgan told RadioTimes.com.

"To do any more would possibly go down an avenue that would lead to people being unsatisfied. I think it's important to end on a high.

"When I read the final episodes I was extremely pleased with them. I was also shocked - they were very unexpected," he said.

"I obviously had in my head an idea of where they were going to go, and from having read Arthurian legend, I knew how it ended in legend.

"I was very, very pleased with it and I think the fans will be too."

Source

Interesting. Honestly, it feels like both he and Bradley James are happy with how the show ended. I hope I'll be similarly satisfied. I'm hoarding all the episodes, starting with 505, to watch them in one go over Xmas. AFAIK, the show ends on Dec. 24th, right?
katikat: (S_Merlin)

Why Merlin actually ended? Forget about the writers' great "We had a plan!" speech. It turns out that Bradley James wanted out.

"We were asked if we wanted to do a series six, but I'd always had in my mind that we'd kind of gone as far as we could - off the back of the five series - and I've always harped on about wanting to leave it on a high. I think that's what's been achieved this year."

(...)

"We could've stayed on and made a series six and made lots of money, but... I don't think that's what you need to be aiming to do in life," he said. "You need to be creating good things that entertain people and I'm not sure series six would've done that."

However, James added that he would "never say never" to reprising his role of King Arthur in a future Merlin movie.

"In a situation like that, if someone came along with a script that really excited me, it would be very difficult to say no," he admitted. "But it would have to be for the right reasons. If we were to do a film... it would have to be worth making."

Source (No longer available)

Honestly, I don't blame him. I will miss the show and I am sorry we will never get to see Merlin properly fight by Arthur's side, as his equal, not as the village doofus. But Bradley never made a secret of disliking the Arthur/Gwen pairing and that he preferred it when the show focused on Merlin and Arthur. Which is, IMHO, the reason why his response was a NO to S6 and only a MAYBE to a movie.

You know, this is one of the few shows where canon does not influence my fanon feeling. Maybe because the Gwen/Arthur pairing... I never felt it. I never felt their passion or love*. It's always been "I love you, Gwen. Bye, Gwen! *off with the knights and Merlin*" That's definitely not the stuff of legends.

(* Pretty much the way I felt about Keller/McKay in SGA - it always felt like McKay got together with her because he couldn't have Sheppard. One moment Rodney was telling her how much he loved her, in the next he was off and after another adventure with John. It also didn't help that the actors weren't into it at all and felt the whole thing was very awkward.)

ETA: LOL, it looks like DigitalSpy took the article down. Well, lucky me I copied and pasted the gist of it. So, here you have it... :P
katikat: (S_Merlin)

Well, it's official. BBC posted a press release, stating S5 was Merlin's last. Not that it wasn't expected but there has been talk about S6 or TV movies, so... Well, it's official now: link.

Honestly, I don't get how anybody can say this show "has run its natural course" or that the storylines reached their apex. Merlin's still being regarded as the village idiot, he's still a servant, not a trusted adviser and court sorcerer... *sigh* I hoped we would get more than a rushed, last second reveal, that we would actually see Arthur the Warrior/King and Merlin the Sorcerer working side by side... Yeah, I'm still miffed, not matter how I turn or twist it.

At this point, I hope the series finale really IS epic, that they won't repeat the clusterfest that was the S4 finale, that they actually deliver at least on this promise. Please, get at least THIS right, writers, and I might forgive you for all the other disappointments.

My perfect finale would be Arthur and Merlin leaving for Avalon to wait there till they are needed again, with Gwen staying as the Queen of Camelot. That would be heartbreaking but at the same time it would FEEL like a legend in the making.

Looks like Merlin really is ending in its current form - or most of the knights will be killed off in future episodes, that's a possibility too, true. Not only was Tim Hopper (Percival) cast as a regular in Black Sails, Eoin Macken (Gwaine) now got the lead part in NBC's After Hours. As Deadline.com says, the show "revolves around the graveyard shift in the ER at San Antonio Medical Center. It centers on TC Callahan (Macken), who has returned from the Army to practice his unorthodox brand of medicine, often butting heads with his superiors." I'm not into shows about doctors but this one might be interesting, if picked up, to see an army doctor used to practicing medicine in combat situations return back to normal life... Hm. And with Eoin Macken... Gwaine is my favorite knight and Eoin is simply gorgeous!

So, the end of Merlin, huh? I haven't been always a big fan, some parts of the show turn me off - I'm looking at you, wounded-doe-martyr!Gwen! - but this will be the end of an era, that's true, just like when Stargate or Smallville or House ended, shows that you got used to just being THERE...
