Fast & Furious 8: I liked the movie a lot, despite the fact that Paul Walker wasn't in it - ;_; - but this time not because of Dom and his crew, but because of Hobbs and Shaw, the whole Shaw family - Helen Mirren was a hoot! - and Mr Nobody and Little Nobody. I would be actually more interested in a Hobbs & Shaw spin-off than in another FF movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: I hope that this is not it for Peter's special powers. Because they made him actually interesting - as in interesting on par with Cpt. America or Thor! - and not just a regular guy. I loved the Gamora and Nebula stuff. Raccoon and the "twig" XD And Sylvester Stallone's cameo! I loved that. Definitely better than movie #1.

Furious 7!

Furious 7 just beat The Avengers and became the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time! link. I know that it'll be soon beaten by Jurassic World and probably The Avengers 2, too, but right now, it's sitting in the 3rd place, up there with Avatar and Titanic. And considering it's the only movie NOT in 3D up there, wow! Paul Walker would've been proud!

Furious 7

Furious 7 broke another BO milestone, it now earned over $1.5 BILLION worldwide! Link. 1.5 BILLION dollars, folks! That makes me insanely happy. Paul Walker's last movie deserves to be remembered as a HUGE box office success, not just a blip on a radar, but as something that will always be mentioned up there with The Avengers, Avatar and Titanic. Good. Very good!

Also, there's this persisting rumor that Paul Walker's brother, Cody Walker, will be in the 8th movie. It's been brought up time and time again. I actually hope it's true. I would love for him to be there and to actually play Brian's brother. Maybe a brother he didn't know about, a brother who went looking for him after seeing him in the news, mentioned in connection with Dom's escape. I would love for Dom to take him under his wing... I just want some... tiny piece of Paul Walker to still be a part of this series. He and Vin Diesel built it up from nothing. I don't want to lose Paul Walker and Brian O'Conner completely, if that makes any sense.

I wasn't all that interested in the Point Break remake when it was first announced. The original movie is still cool, even years later. And it already got a remake, just with cars, it's called Fast and Furious. But then...

Then Paul Walker died. And, good grief, even today, when I think of it, my heart clenches in my chest and tears well up in my eyes. No Paul Walker, means no Brian O'Conner in future F&F movies. And even though I loved the ending his character got, it was sweet and respectful and full of hope, I think... I think I would've preferred if they re-cast the part, as sacrilegious as it sounds. Because, even though I can't imagine anyone else but Paul Walker ever playing the part of Brian O'Conner, for me, F&F is DOM AND BRIAN. Not Dom and Letty and the crew and stupid, amazing stunts. But Dom and Brian and their incredible friendship. Because they built their little family together and Brian was the only equal Dom had in the group: Dom was the head, Brian was the heart. And without Brian... the whole scale tips in the wrong direction. Now, I wish that they had Brian shot in the face or something and the part re-cast with someone else. Just so I wouldn't lose Brian O'Conner on top of Paul Walker, too.

But that didn't happen and won't happen. And now I hope that the Point Break remake will make up for that with Bodhi and Johnny. That Bodhi doesn't die at the end like he did in the first movie, that they will leave his fate open for a possible sequel should the movie be successful enough to start a franchise - and that the actors will have as amazing chemistry as Paul and Vin did. Because that would be wonderful. I just need this... bromance... in an action movie again. Because you don't see it as often as one would think, these days it's mostly lone wolf heroes or traditional couples - tough guy/sensitive girl. And that's not my cuppa...

This had me bawling so hard my head started aching...

It's been a long day without you my friend
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
We've come a long way from where we began
Oh I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again

The rest of it cut... )

Title: Furious 7 (2015)

Cast: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michele Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Dwayne Johnson

Rating: 7/10

This is not my favorite FF movie. That honor belongs to FF5, closely followed by FF4. I think it's on par with FF6. Though my experience was definitely clouded by the knowledge that this is Paul Walker's last movie. I just couldn't enjoy it to the fullest, knowing that he died and they had to change the story, that his character would've gone in a completely different direction if Paul hadn't died...

My favorite part was definitely the rescue of Ramsey, the action on the bus - it's not really a spoiler, it's been in every trailer and sneak peek. That was hands down the best sequence. And I also really liked Kurt Russell's character, Mr Nobody - he was a sassy, kick-ass smart-ass. I liked him a lot and I'm glad we will learn more about him in FF8.

On the other hand, I thought that they underused Jason Statham - the Decker Shaw situation didn't really feel like the main storyline - and Lucas Black, too. And there were only a handful of scenes with Dom and Brian. It feels as if with the broadening of the franchise's scope, it lost some of its intimacy that was still there in FF4 and FF5, when it was mostly just Dom, Brian and Mia.

And the ending... Yes, I was all teary-eyed! Spoilers! )

Definitely worth seeing in the cinema. But if you do bawl easily - like me - I would recommend you to spoil yourself for how it ends so that you're prepared. I'm glad I did. I don't think I could have stopped myself from crying otherwise.

I'm so looking forward to this movie. At the same time... it will be the end of Brian O'Conner. He was the reason why I watched the series. Yeah, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the rest of them are cool but it was Paul Walker who has drawn me in time and time again! Paul and his Brian O'Conner. Because he was the perfect counterbalance to Vin's Dom. Because Letty and the rest of the gang, they follow Dom but only Brian was his equal, when he had something to say, Dom LISTENED. When they needed two points, it was always Dom and Brian... Without Brian, the whole gang will be totally unbalanced in the next movie. It will be Dom as the leader and the rest as his followers, he will lack a partner. God, that makes me so sad!
katikat: (S_Hannibal)

This looks amazing. And I'm really looking forward to it. At the same time, whenever I remember that Paul Walker's dead and there won't be any more FF movies with Brian O'Conner, who's my favorite character in all the series, my chest clenches up and my eyes start burning. Damn you, Paul!
katikat: (S_Hannibal)

Looks amazing! But it also makes the fact that Paul Walker's dead all the harder :( God, I'll miss his Brian O'Conner so much...

... On a very personal level. There are rumors flying around about Vin Diesel acting "oddly" on the set of F&F7, staying in his trailer all day long and so on: link. I think... I think it's really hard for him to continue this movie without Paul Walker. He responded very kindly to these rumors, IMHO:

He always knew I would fight for hiim, whether it was to protect his deal or to protect his integrity, and he knew that if it made for a better film, I was going to do whatever it took. It is why together, we won best duo twice, 12 years apart.

They say Paul Walker was his best friend. But I wonder... I wonder if Vin Diesel actually realized that before Paul's death. Or if it didn't hit him until now just much he misses Paul and how much Paul actually meant to him. I mean, rumors always said that Vin was a bit of a diva and I think Paul's laid-back attitude compensated for it, he made everything run smoother just by being there, acting like a buffer between Vin and the rest of the crew. And I wonder if everybody's just now realizing just how big a part he had played in the production.

Fuck! Pardon my French but every time I think I'm over Paul Walker's death, something like this happens and I start bawling again.

Sources tell THR that Walker's character, Brian O'Conner, will not be killed off in the film, now set for release April 10, 2015. Instead, the plan is to "retire" the character in a way that the studio hopes will satisfy fans of the franchise and make use of the existing footage of Walker, who died about halfway through the Fast 7 shoot.

In the weeks after the tragedy, director James Wan, writer Chris Morgan and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Universal's lead executive on the Fast films, pored over the footage Wan had shot. The trio then devised a plan to tweak the existing script so that Walker would remain a part of the story but could be written out, allowing the franchise to continue without him.

The changes will require some additional scenes to be written and shot, but the eight-month delay of release provides plenty of time.

Well, at least something, right? If they killed him... I don't think I would be able to handle that. But, to be honest, I'm not even looking forward to the movie - actually, the franchise as a whole pretty much lost my interest. For me, Paul Walker and his Brian O'Conner WERE the franchise. I loved FF because of BOTH Dom and Brian, because of their friendship. I don't really care about Dom by himself or about Letty or Mia or Hobbs or... or that guy from FF3. Yes, the movies are about the Toretto family - but for me, Brian was the heart of it. Now...

And... I'm depressed again. Fuck. I wonder when I will finally be able to read a mention of Paul Walker without tears immediately stinging my eyes...

Gal Gadot - Gisele from Fast & Furious was cast as Wonder Woman in the next Superman movie: link. Good. I like her. Loved her as Gisele. She is Israeli and she was in the army, so she CAN kick ass!

Regarding the completion of Fast 7, it looks like their insurance company might end up being the one who decides if the whole movie will be scraped or completed: link. If they scrape it and throw away everything Paul filmed, it will be frickin' disrespectful! I would hate that more than if they killed Brian off, to be honest. Paul was so proud of his work on this movie...

ETA: They now officially shut down the production while they contemplate what to do next: link.

An interesting take on why Brian O'Conner needs a happy ending in the Fast & Furious franchise:

More importantly, Mr. Walker’s death has dealt a potentially serious artistic, and thus potentially financial, blow to the franchise as a whole. The long term peril to the long-running cars-and-crime franchise is not to be dismissed. Because the franchise gave Brian O’Conner and Mia Toretto a newborn child, Brian is arguably the one character in the franchise that can’t be easily written out without negating the entire series’s emotional arc.

The Fast & Furious series is rooted in its character relationships and mythology as much as its action spectacle. The surrogate family unit headed up by Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Jordana Brewster forms the emotional backbone of the series which makes the action and stunt work matter beyond pure pyrotechnics. The entire “arc” of the last several films has been one of creating and keeping the family whole. The fourth film was about avenging the death of a loved one, the fifth film was about providing a stable environment for a new child, and the sixth entry was about retrieving a lost family member. Keeping Brian, Mia, and their son a cohesive whole, making sure young Jack had a father like Dom’s (active and participatory) rather than Brian’s (a complete non-entity in his son’s life) is the thing what makes their adventures “worth it”. It’s what made us care (...).

Killing off Paul Walker’s character in an action-based fashion (explosion, gunfire, etc.) directly or indirectly due to his involvement with the Toretto “family”, leaving his wife a widow and his young son without a father, would invalidate the central narrative arc of the films up to this point. It would make the entire franchise an exercise in failure on the part of these characters who have fought so hard and risked so much to keep their family whole. A theoretical happy ending for Brian’s immediate family is absolutely essential to the franchise as an emotionally satisfying journey. (...) If the franchise is to continue, there needs to be a “happy” reason for Brian O’Conner to never show up again.

The cause of Paul Walker's death was revealed. He didn't die on impact, the cause was burning: link. FUCK IT! This is just getting worse and worse!

Universal and the team behind Fast & Furious 7 are facing a delay in production following the tragic death of actor Paul Walker, but sources say the movie will not be abandoned entirely.

The cast and crew of Fast 7 had been scheduled to return to Atlanta on Sunday to resume shooting the big-budget film, which features extensive car racing. Those plans are on hold until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest.

Director James Wan and Universal executives held a conference call Sunday morning to discuss the state of the film, whether rewrites would be necessary and how to proceed in a manner that would be respectful to Walker’s death. Walker, 40, was a favorite on the set of the Fast movies, and his death has left his fellow stars, including Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, and the crew devastated.

Insiders say a large part of the film had been shot, although in January, Walker and the rest of the Fast 7 team were scheduled to travel to Abu Dhabi to film additional scenes.

Personally, I hope they end the series after #7. Vin Diesel is the head of these movies but Paul Walker was the heart. If the movie is largely shot and Brian can be left alive, not killed off to explain the actor's absence, then they should just stop. Make the Hobbs spin-off or whatever. Just stop making the movies about Dom's family. Because I just can't imagine Dom's family without Brian. Brian joining the Torreto gang was the whole point of FF4 and FF5. If they went on without him, it would be pure milking and it would leave a really bad aftertaste in my mouth. Please, don't. Please, cast and crew, show respect to your friend by making the last movie in the series be a tribute to him.

Lucas Black who played Sean Boswell in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift will be back for Fast & Furious 7 - and 8 and 9: link.

For those who don’t know, Universal Pictures made a deal with Vin Diesel that in exchange for a limited-time use of the rights to Riddick he would do a cameo in Tokyo Drift, and now that investment is paying off. According to Deadline, Lucas Black is not only returning for Fast & Furious 7 but at least two more series installments.

Yes, Fast & Furious 8 and 9 are on the way, not that the news comes as any surprise. Vin Diesel already has begun talking up the eight installment along with Kurt Russell’s role that sequel, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has already teased the potential for a spinoff involving his character, Luke Hobbs. As the franchise gets bigger, so too does its fan base with Fast & Furious 6 raking in nearly $800 million worldwide.

I guess I will finally have to watch Tokyo Drift, huh?

So many new actors added to the cast: Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Tony Jaa, Nathalie Emmanuel and now Djimon Hounsou. Sheesh on a pogo stick! And people are complaining about how huge the XM:DOFP cast is...

The Glades was canceled after 4 seasons: link. I wasn't following it religiously anymore but I was set to get it on DVD once it was over. Not anymore. The season - now series - finale ends on such a terrible cliffhanger - spoilers! ) - that I just can't be bothered. And honestly, pardon my French, but FUCK YOU, A&E! Way to appreciate your viewers. One can say a lot about networks like the CW but they've never canned a long-running show without giving it the time to wrap things up.

♠ Kurt Russell was offered a role in Fast & Furious 7: link. Rumors have it that it's the same part that Denzel Washington turned down. Interesting!

♠ Bradley Cooper will be voicing Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy: link. Apparently, he was the director's, James Gun's, dream casting for the part. Nice!

♠ James Spader was cast as Ultron in The Avengers: Age of Ultron: link. Nice! I have no idea who or what Ultron is so I'm totally unbiased. And looking forward to it even more now!

♠ An interesting report from the Sherlock set, saying that they staged a few "false shots" to throw people off their scent: link. Interesting. But also sad that so called fans make it so hard for the makers of their beloved show to actually film it. Shame on you, gawkers :(

Music Vid

Even though I didn't like FF6 as much as FF5, the soundtrack is still rockin' awesome. Especially the title song, We Own It by 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa. And the fact that the production team made an official music vid to go with it... Awesome! I hope they will use it in FF7 too, this kind of montage!
katikat: (f+f-gravity)

It was a lot of fun. But I wasn't as smitten with it as I had been with FF5. It was a bit all over the place, not as tightly woven as FF5. The highlights were, as always, Brian and Dom - though I wish they had more scenes together - and Han and Gisele.

Here there be spoilers! )

I would give it... 7/10, I think. I liked it better than Iron Man 3 but not as much as FF5.
katikat: (f+f-gravity)
FF5 feels so much broader than FF4. There are so many characters but all the main ones feel really fleshed out. And you just have to like them. Out of all of them, I fell for Han and Giselle the hardest. Such a cool, cool couple. You know, I wish there were more awesome power couples like them in movies.

But the best thing? The sense of family in this movie. Usually, in movies like this, it's all talk and little show. Here, it's little talk and all show. You actually get why these people stick together, why they like and trust each other. And it's wonderful. Truly, truly wonderful. And again, this is a franchise built on fast, loud cars! And yet, some writers could learn a lot from the way these movies are written.

Also, them taking out a bank with a bouncing vault will never NOT be funny, LOL!

And I'm all set up to see FF6 tomorrow. Go me!
katikat: (f+f-gravity)
So, I plan to go and see Fast & Furious 6 with the twins this weekend, so I thought I would watch at least FF4 and FF5 before that...

Man, this whole movie is all about Dom and Brian and their friendship. Sure, it's about avenging Letty and about Brian and Mia becoming an item - but all that's just background noise to Dom and Brian's epic friendship. It's wonderful to actually see it develop throughout the movies. Who would've thought that in a franchise like FF that's so loud and noisy, you would find such excellent character development!

There are so many cool bits. Like when Dom just taps Brian's car in the race for Braga because he doesn't want to see Brian hurt, just out of the race - unlike the other drivers whom Dom literally demolishes! Or when they can't stop poking each other verbally in front of Braga until he makes them admit they know each other. Or when Brian saves Dom's life during the shoot-out with Phoenix. Or when Brian gives Dom his car keys during the bust, you know, just to be sure Dom could escape if need be. Or when Brian comes to Dom and tells him he's going with him to Mexico. Or when Dom keeps the enemy drivers off Brian so that Brian can get Braga over the border. Or when Dom sees Brian all smashed up and bleeding... *_*

And the ending! Still one of my favorite movie endings EVER! The prison bus! The car! Dom's smile! So, SO GOOD!
